Happy 2009!

Well, we survived the holidays! They were _________. Fill in the blank with almost any word: busy, exciting, fun, hectic…

Christmas Eve was fun. We ate dinner, Hubby made a standing rib roast and it turned out as one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had! It was incredible! After dinner we put out the reindeer food to attract the reindeer to our house. After that we put out Santa’s milk and cookies. Courtney had no problem going to sleep since she still doesn’t quite grasp the Santa thing.

That also means the next morning she wasn’t up at the crack of dawn. We came down the stairs and she started to attack the gifts. We were able to pull her away pretty fast to get some breakfast in her. After she ate, she went wild, ripping off paper and wanting to play with every gift. Her favorite was the doll house that Grammy and Granddad got her. She was also very excited to receive a pillow for her bed from Santa. She made it through about 5 gifts before she was done unwrapping and just wanted to play with the things she had already opened. So, we ended up opening up most of her gifts for her. We put her down for nap around her usual time (12:30pm), but she was still so wound up from the morning that she didn’t fall asleep.

We got her out of bed about 2:30pm to get ready to head out. We were heading down to Nana and Papa’s house, but we made a stop at the zoo on the way. Yes, our zoo is open 365 days a year. So we stopped to wish the giraffes a Merry Christmas, and feed them some Christmas crackers. I was amazed at the fact that the parking lot was actually about half full! The giraffes were out and really ready to eat crackers!

After we spent some time there, we headed to Nana and Papa’s. Courtney opened about 3 gifts there before she was done opening. So, Hubby and I opened most of her gifts for her there. She had fun delivering gifts to people and playing with toys.

We opened a lot of gifts and ate a large dinner. We finally got Courtney home about 8:30pm, which is about an hour past her regular bedtime. Between that and no nap, she was very ready for bed. She was pretty grouchy the next day, which is pretty typical for her. And Hubby had to go into work for a few hours that morning. So, I spent the morning of my birthday trying to appease a grouchy 2 year old. I started by giving her a bath because she didn’t have one the night before and I knew that night she wouldn’t have one either because of birthday festivities. After she got out of the tub and I was drying her off I told her today was my birthday. She was so cute, she looked at me and said “I need to go and get you a cake!”

That evening, my family came up and we had a nice dinner of ham, veggies, bread, and stuff. It was very yummy! And my mom made one of my favorites, a rum cake!

It was back to work on Monday and Tuesday. New Years Eve finally arrived and we worked for a few hours, before heading out to shop. We had to get stuff to get ready for our party. That afternoon I picked up Courtney from daycare and took her right to my mom and dad’s house. She was spending the night with them.

We had a great party as usual. The cheese fondue was yummy, as was the chocolate course! We had our countdown to midnight with Dick Clark (they tape delay it for us). The funny thing is that just a few short years ago the party would last until about 1am. This year I think the last person left about 12:20pm. Midnight hit and everyone left. Which I was okay with, because I was exhausted, but I just found it funny.

We spent New Year’s day trying to recover the house, and we had to go and pick up Courtney as well. The afternoon was spent watching football. After bath time, we dressed Courtney as a VT Hokie cheerleader, as the game was just starting. She learned how to say “block that kick”, which worked, because the kick was blocked!

Hubby came down with a stomach flu or food poisoning during the game, and he spent all day Friday sick. Today he is feeling better but is still wiped out. Courtney has been a good daughter, covering him up with blankets on the couch and bringing him things to keep him entertained, or at least things she thinks would keep him entertained.

Well, I need to go and try to recover some more of the house, and do laundry and such. I hope all of you had a

wonderful holiday and a safe and happy entry into 2009!
